Returning Birds to Bempton Cliffs

At this cliff top nature reserve each season brings a different experience as different breeds of birds come home to breed and others leave to migrate only to return the following year.

In Spring you generally hear the air filled with birdsong as the birds look for the best place to call home as they breed their new family. Ins Summer you find the new young birds taking their first venture out of the nest into the big wide world. Autumn is the time for the birds to migrate south to warmer climates as the temperature cools in the UK.

Lots of breeding seabirds migrate back to Bempton Cliffs including gannets, puffins, herring gulls and razorbills to name a few. Some farmland birds also use the cliffs as a nesting area are skylarks, linnets and meadow pippets.
To catch the cliffs full of nest building birds the best time to go is between April and August.

To catch these lovely birds on the cliffs you must visit between mid - April and mid - July. To get a good look at all the nesting birds you can view them from one of the six safe cliff-edge viewing platforms. So don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera!! At Bempton Cliffs there is a seabird centre you can visit that tells you all about the birds that may see and how they go about their daily life.

they also sell refreshments and snacks and have a decked area that you can sit out at one of the table and chairs overlooking the reserve while you have a bite to eat.

the reserve is open all year and the seabird centre is open 9.30am - 5pm in the Summer and 9.30am - 4pm in Winter. There is an admission charge of £3.50 for non member adults, children aged between 5-17 years are £1.50.

Dogs are welcome on the reserve if you are a dog owner, but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

So if you are staying with us at Whitby Holiday Park and would like somewhere different to visit while you are here with us, then this makes a great day out for all ages.
