Whitby Travel Guide

When you come to stay with us at Whitby Holiday Park this guide may be of some use to getting out and about in Whitby town centre!

Directly from the Park you can pick up the Cleveland Way footpath. This is located just in front of the Holiday Homes that are just passed the road that leads upto the touring field.

This is signposted for everyone as we do get a lot of walkers through our Park who walk the Cleveland Way. As you get up onto the footpath that winds its way along the coast you can see Whitby Abbey in the distance. This walk along will take no more than 20 minutes and brings you out just next to Whitby Abbey. You will then need to head into the church yard of St Mary's Parish Church and head for the famous 199 steps that will lead you down into the old part of Whitby onto the cobbled street.

At the bottom of the 199 steps you can turn right and just a little way up the street (Henrietta Street) you will come to Fortunes Kipper House. This has been in Whitby since 1872. You can get beautifully smoked kippers which have had high praise from even the Royal family!

Turning left at the bottom of the 199 steps will lead you onto the old part of Church Street with its quaint alleys and little shops selling everything from Whitby Jet to books and homemade soaps!!

As you carry on down the cobbled street of Church Street you will see the Market Place on your right handside. You will find here Abbey Wharf (was called Shambles until recently) where you can get a good meal where they specialise in fish and chips and steak. With views over the harbour to the west of Whitby you can watch the world go by as you dine.

On the other side of the swing bridge (with the Dolphin pub on the corner of it) you will come across the main shopping street of Whitby. On this street you will find your usual high street shops such as Boots and Superdrug, but you will also find the local Bothams tearooms and shop. Their potted meat and cakes are to die for!

If shopping isn't what you are looking to do, then you can head right after you go over the swing bridge and head on down towards the Pier and the Amusement Arcades. Hours of fun can be had down there with the slot machines and rides for the children. Above the middle arcade there is a soft play area and mini bowling alley and in the far end arcade there is a mini adventure golf. After all the fun in the arcades treat all the family to an ice cream and a walk down to the old lighthouse. The views as you look back on Whitby are amazing.

You will need more than 1 day to look around our lovely quaint little fishing town!
