David Bellamy Conservation Award

June 24, 2017 Atlantic Coast Holiday Park

Atlantic Coast is one of four parks owned by Coastdale Parks, each of the Parks are winners of the David Bellamy Conservation Award. This means whilst having a fantastic holiday near the Sand dunes and the three miles of golden beaches in Hayle, Cornwall, we are also helping the environment.

Our resident seagull at Atlantic Coast - Gully, can often be found 'chilling out' in one of the planters in the wildlife garden. Here he is monitoring progress on the new mound for the children to sit on whilst looking out for wildlife and the many bugs entering our Bug Hotel.

We see plenty of birds flying around the Park, diving into the hedges, singing away in the trees. Swallows have been nesting, the chicks are protected by their parents, who keep a beady eye on passers by! We have many bird feeders around the Park but we struggle to keep up with feeding the birds, we rely on  the children visiting the Park for their holidays, to help us with this.

The new planters we have made for the Wildlife Garden and for outside our Reception area, all have been made from recycled wood from decking taken down when our older caravans are taken away. They have been made in different shapes and sizes to make them more appealing to the children, and made to a height where the children can help to look after the plants and look for bugs at the same time.

The talented partner of our landscape gardener, kindly made this sign for our garden, again using natural recycled wood. The sign sits nicely on our Cornish Hedge Stone wall.
To add a bit more colour to attract the bees and butterflies, we have included this smiley Bee garden wind toy. We also have a Butterfly house, and now the plants are starting to blossom, we are seeing some very pretty butterflies in our garden.
Future projects for Atlantic Coast David Bellamy Conservation Award -

We have been watching Steve Backshall's 'Meet the Hedgehogs' programme on Channel 5. This has inspired us to put a Hedgehog house in our Wildlife Garden with a plan to sink the 2 dishes into the ground for water for the Hedgehogs. The Garden is tucked away behind our Reception, this should be a safe place for Hedgehogs to make their home.

We have many, many rabbits around the Park, the Hedgerows project for the David Bellamy Conservation Awards may prove challenging for us. The rabbits jump in and out of the hedges around the Park so quickly, we will have to be on our toes when trying to get a photograph or 2......... watch this space!
